Las Cruces, NM (March 5, 2024) – A tragic accident claimed the life of Samantha Bursum, a 14-year-old student from Las Cruces High School, last Friday, March 1. She was en route to a volleyball tournament in Midland when the crash occurred on I-20 east milepost 73, Ward County, near Pecos at 9:32 p.m.
A 2008 Cadillac CTS, driven by Isaac Mendoza, 25, and previously involved in a crash, was stationary and unlit on the roadway. Loretta Keleher Wills, 50, was driving a 2016 Toyota SUV, colliding with the Cadillac, and could not see it in time.
Bursum succumbed to her injuries at Ward Memorial Hospital. Both Wills and Mendoza sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Bursum was not only a volleyball player but also an active member of the student government and engaged in advanced placement courses.
Las Cruces Public Schools expressed deep sorrow over the loss. The investigation into the crash continues.
