Tucumcari, NM – Two Dead in Separate Semi-Truck Crashes on I-40

Tucumcari, NM (June 3, 2025) – Two people were killed and several others injured Sunday morning in a pair of separate but related crashes involving semi-trucks on Interstate 40 near mile marker 267, just outside Tucumcari. The incidents occurred hours apart and remain under active investigation by New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

The first crash happened around 5:00 a.m. when a semi-truck traveling eastbound left the roadway, overcorrected, and overturned. A second semi-truck attempted to avoid the initial wreck but also overturned in the process. Moments later, a third semi-truck crashed into the wrecked first truck.

The driver of the third semi was transported to the hospital with serious injuries but later died. The other two drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene.

Just a few hours later, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a separate incident occurred at the scene of the first crash. Another semi-truck collided with a patrol vehicle and then veered off into the shoulder, overturning. A passenger in that semi-truck died at the scene. Both the officer in the patrol unit and the semi-truck driver sustained injuries and were hospitalized for treatment.

Authorities from NMSP confirmed that investigations into both crashes are ongoing, and traffic on I-40 was significantly impacted for several hours Sunday morning.
