Santa Fe, NM (March 24, 2025) – A 34-year-old man lost his life in a fatal hit-and-run collision early Sunday morning in Santa Fe, prompting a citywide search for the driver involved. The deadly crash occurred around 2:26 a.m. on March 23, along Cerrillos Rd near Richards Ave—a section of road that lacks a designated pedestrian crosswalk.
According to the Santa Fe Police Department, the victim was attempting to cross Cerrillos Rd when he was struck by a southbound vehicle. The driver did not stop to help or contact emergency services and fled the scene immediately after the impact. A witness at the scene described the suspect vehicle as a silver pickup truck.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and found the man lying in the roadway with life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite lifesaving efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have not yet released the man’s name pending notification of next of kin.
The Santa Fe Police Department is actively investigating the case and working to identify the hit-and-run driver. Officers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information about the silver pickup truck to contact Crash Investigators as soon as possible.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the man who tragically lost his life in this incident.
Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Fatalities in New Mexico
Fatal hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians continue to be a serious issue across New Mexico, particularly in urban centers like Santa Fe. Roadways such as Cerrillos Rd, which serve as high-traffic corridors, often lack safe pedestrian infrastructure in certain segments—placing those on foot at elevated risk, especially during nighttime and early morning hours.
The tragedy that unfolded on Sunday is a painful reminder of the dangers pedestrians face when crossing roads without designated crosswalks. While crossing mid-block is not uncommon, it significantly increases vulnerability, particularly when visibility is low and traffic is still active. In this case, the victim’s decision to cross outside of a marked crosswalk may have played a role, but the driver’s decision to flee the scene remains a serious and criminal act.
New Mexico ranks among the highest in the nation for pedestrian fatalities per capita, and hit-and-run crashes account for a substantial portion of those deaths. The emotional and legal fallout for surviving families is often compounded by the lack of closure that comes with an unidentified suspect. Law enforcement agencies continue to push for community cooperation to solve these crimes and bring justice to grieving families.
For victims’ families, the road ahead is often filled with grief, unanswered questions, and a need for both emotional and legal support. Resources such as victim assistance programs, grief counseling, and legal aid are available in Santa Fe to help families manage the overwhelming aftermath of these tragedies.
