Albuquerque, NM – Vehicle Accident with Trapped Victims on I-40 WB

Albuquerque, NM (September 21, 2024) – On Saturday morning at approximately 8:50 AM, Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) responded to a serious vehicle accident on Interstate 40 Westbound (WB), just east of the Coors exit. The incident involved a rolled-over travel trailer and a van with two occupants trapped inside.

Emergency units, including Engine 4, Rescue 4, Squad 2, and Battalion Chief 1, arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Upon arrival, Rescue 4 confirmed the nature of the accident and immediately began treating the passenger in the van. Meanwhile, Engine 4 and Squad 2 initiated extrication procedures for the trapped driver. Due to the severity of the damage and the intrusion into the driver’s compartment, the extrication process took approximately 30 minutes.

Both patients were transported to local hospitals for treatment of their significant injuries—Rescue 4 transported one individual, while Albuquerque Ambulance Service (AAS) took the second patient.

AFR remained on the scene until around 10:30 AM. Reports from two drivers stuck on I-40 WB indicated that traffic was still at a standstill as of 11:20 AM. However, by the time of this posting, the NM DOT cameras showed that traffic in the area appeared to be moving again.
